Gersten Pavilion to send out seniors tonight

The Lions will host Santa Clara tonight in their final West Coast Conference game of the season and it will be the final home game for a slew of senior Lions, including starters Drew Viney and LaRon Armstead.

Drew Viney is the most naturally talented offensive player I've seen in a Lions uniform in the six years I've been a fan. He only played three years in an LMU jersey, having started his collegiate career at the University of Oregon, but still ranks as one of the greatest players in program history. Drew recently became just the 13th Lion to score more than 1,000 career points while pulling down more than 500 rebounds.

Drew has an unbelievable and diverse offensive game. Able to play both inside and outside the paint, he has moves that are typically only seen at the professional level, from his fadeaway jumper to his pump-fake to his patience and footwork around the rim. He is the type of player capable of exploding for 30 points on any given night.

Unfortunately, Drew's time at LMU has been sprinkled with injury (an off-season foot surgery, a battle with migraines), so I don't think we as fans ever got to see him consistently play to his full potential. He had moments of absolute pure greatness, and moments where he shied away from the spotlight. That's why thinking about a Lion season without Drew is so disappointing and scary. He will undoubtedly leave an unfillable hole.

LaRon Armstead has always been a crowd favorite, and he deserved it. Every interaction I've had with him both during my time covering the team and since I just got the impression that he is one of the nicest guys. Furthermore, he has had, what would have been to many, a somewhat frustrating career as a Lion.

Many have blocked the 2008-09 season from their memories, but that was the year a freshman named LaRon Armstead poured his heart and soul into a team that ended up finishing just 3-28. Vernon Teel and Jarred DuBois seemed to be the face of the struggling program, but when Teel went down with a broken foot LaRon stepped up big, even playing back-to-back games of 40 minutes when the team, with an ever-shrinking roster, needed him to. I'll never forget the team's game at LMU, when LaRon went for 18 points again the No. 12 ranked team. Even Bruins fans were buzzing about the kid.

But then things got more difficult for LaRon, and his minutes diminished dramatically with the arrival of Drew Viney, Larry Davis and others to the team the following two years. I remember talking to Coach Good about him, and how he respected LaRon so much and felt bad that there didn't seem to be a consistent spot for him in the lineup.

That's why I'm so glad he got to have another coming out party this season, and reinserted himself into the starting lineup. Despite being the odd one out of the lineup for the better part of the past two seasons, LaRon continued to work hard and help the team when asked. He deserved this years starting spot more than anybody. He will graduate ranking in the top-25 of games played as a Lion.

Tim Diederichs will most likely appear in his final game as a Lion tonight. Tim is the longest tenured player on the team, and consistently worked hard to improve. Even when not appearing in games, Tim was an asset to the team with his positive attitude and motivation from the bench. Drew always liked playing with Tim for the simple reason that he focused on fundamentals, boxing out, setting screen, etc.

Walk-ons Kelsey Chine and Daniel Latimer will also be honored at tonight's Senior Night ceremony. Like Tim, Daniel has been an exceptionally positive figure on the bench. Also seems like an extremly nice guy every time I interacted with him. Kelsey approached Coach Good concerning a walk-on spot when he arrived at LMU. I remember Coach Good telling me how impressed he was with the kid, who played high school ball with Jarred. I wish them both the best.

Lions to face tough test in season opener

The wait is over for Lions fans to put last year's disappointing season behind them, as LMU will officially begin their 2011-12 season Friday at the L.A. Sports Arena when it takes on the UCLA Bruins. It definitely won't be an easy opener for the Lions, as UCLA has been selected by many to be one of the top 25 teams in the nation in preseason rankings.

The biggest challenge for LMU is going to be protecting the paint. The Bruins boast a huge lineup, with four roster players checking in at 6'10" or taller. The Lions, on the other hand, will be without one of their best rebounders, with Drew Viney likely sidelined for a couple more weeks. Godwin Okonji, Edgar Garibay, Tim Diederichs and Ashley Hamilton will have to show up big on the boards if the Lions want to have a chance to steal a "W" from their crosstown rivals.

The biggest thing the Lions have going for them, however, is the fact that they have a much more talented backcourt than the Bruins. Jarred DuBois and Anthony Ireland need to take over this game, and even out the fact that the Lions may get pounded inside by the Bruins big men's depth. To make matters easier for DuBois, Ireland and even freshman Bruce English is the fact that UCLA's Jerime Anderson is suspended for the game, meaning the Bruins will have even less manpower to try and stop the Lions speedy back court.

This past weekend, LMU scrimmaged a tough UNLV team (losing by single-digits), which I think was probably great preparation for Friday's game. Either way, it should be a good one. Game tips off Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Thoughts from the Crimson/Navy Scrimmage

  • Team camaraderie seems great. Of course, in a high-pressure, competitive setting is when this will be tested, but I was happy with what I saw today.
  • Freshman C.J. Blackwell should be a contributor from day one. He has a nice mid-range jump shot, and has an ability to create space for a shot (very Drew Viney-like) that is very impressive for a freshman.
  • I can't wait to see Anthony Ireland and Jarred DuBois play together. Jarred is more vocal than I remember him being, and Ireland will enter the season as a starter for the first time, which I think will really help him know his place. He is so quick and his ability to get to the hoop is beyond impressive.
  • The big-men struggled a little offensively. Edgar Garibay, Godwin Okonji and Tim Diederichs had some trouble putting the ball in the hoop, a problem they also had last season.
  • Ashley Hamilton was pretty MIA offensively, which surprised me. He played some solid defense though, and he had Godwin had a number of big-time blocked shots.
  • Nice to see both Tobe Okafor and Nick Stover in attendance.
Up next, the Lions will play their lone exhibition game Tuesday, Nov. 1 against La Verne. Game starts at 7 p.m.

Lions hold off Anteaters to finish non-conference play at .500

Drew Viney again had a big game against UC Irvine (6-8), leading LMU (7-7) with 22 points and ten rebounds to an eventual 87-80 win. Five players scored in double figures for the Lions, who allowed a 19 point second-half lead dwindle down to four with just four minutes remaining. Clutch free throw shooting from Anthony Ireland pushed the lead back to eight with less than a minute to play and the Lions held on for the win, snapping a two-game losing streak.

The Lions have now finished non-conference play, and stand at an even 7-7 on the season.

Viney had his seventh double-double of the season and guard Vernon Teel had added 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Teel also went 10-13 from the free throw line. Point guard Anthony Ireland chipped in 15 points and six assists, going a perfect 6-6 from the stripe.

Larry Davis and Tim Diederichs scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Lions played without center Edgar Garibay, and center Godwin Okonji had early foul trouble, leaving LMU somewhat shorthanded in the front court. Despite playing with less size, LMU outscored UC Irvine 38-18 in the paint, and out-rebounded them 37-28.

The Lions will now have a week off to prepare for WCC play. The conference schedule starts with a bang for LMU, as they host defending WCC Tournament champs St. Mary's on Thursday. The game tips off at 6 p.m and can be seen on ESPNU.
